People’s Republic of Bangladesh
In August 1947, India and Pakistan declared independence from the United Kingdom. At the time, Pakistan consisted of West Pakistan and East Bengal (both primarily Muslim), geographically separated by India (largely Hindu). East Bengal became East Pakistan in 1955, but the Bengalis felt marginalized, so East Pakistan declared war on West Pakistan on 25 March 1971, and declared its independence as the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 17 April 1971, though victory wasn’t achieved until 16 December 1971.
Government of Bangladesh
The issuance of coins and 1- and 2-taka notes is the responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh (GOV), whereas higher denomination notes have historically been issued by the Bangladesh Bank (BB). In 2016, the issuance of 5-taka notes was transferred to the government.
Bangladesh Bank
Bangladesh Bank, the central bank and apex regulatory body for the country’s monetary and financial system, was established in Dhaka by the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972 (P.O. No. 127 of 1972) with retroactive effect from 16 December 1971.
The issuance of coins and 1- and 2-taka notes is the responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh (GOV), whereas higher denomination notes are issued by the Bangladesh Bank (BB). For more information, visit www.bangladesh-bank.org.
