2015 – 2017 9th Series Issues

These notes were designed by Zurich-based graphic artist Manuela Pfrunder, who placed second in the SNB’s design competition in November 2005. Pfrunder’s original designs for the six notes (ranging from 10 to 1,000 Swiss francs) required extensive reworking, both artistically and technically, before production began in mid-2008. This series of notes was inspired by the theme “The many facets of Switzerland.” The new family consists of the same denominations as the preceding family, but the notes are reduced in size for easier handling.
“The new notes were designed by Manuela Pfrunder and printed by Orell Füssli Security Printing Ltd using an innovative, three-layer banknote substrate (Durasafe: two outer layers of cotton banknote paper fused together with a central core of transparent polymer). The combination of complex security features and sophisticated design provides state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting protection. The new series equips Switzerland with banknotes that are both more modern and more secure than the previous generation.”
Security features include intaglio printing, latent images, microtext, holographic stripes, microperf Swiss cross, Omron rings, multicolor Swiss cross as registration device, watermarks, security fibers, UV printing, raised lines to help visually impaired determine denominations.
In April 2019, the 9th series notes from the Swiss National Bank won the “Best New Banknote Series” award at the High Security Printing EMEA Conference in Malta.
