2022 Commemorative Issues

This 7-dollar legal tender note commemorates Rugby 7s bronze and gold medal wins in the women’s and men’s tournaments, respectively, at the 2020 Summer Olympics (XXXII) held belatedly in Tokyo, Japan from 23 July – 8 August 2021 due to COVID-19. Fittingly, these notes are varnished with Bioguard, adding antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-viral properties to the surface. As Bioguard is a product of Oberthur Fiduciaire, it’s assumed they are the printer of this note which bears no imprint.
A total of 2,000,000 notes were printed and introduced into circulation at face value. Special numismatic collector sets, uncut pairs, and 7-note sheets are also available through the Reserve Bank of Fiji.

2020 Commemorative Issues

This 50-dollar legal tender note commemorates Fiji’s 50th anniversary of independence, hence the special FAI prefix. It was introduced along with a 50-cent commemorative coin. Special numismatic collector sets are now also available through the Reserve Bank of Fiji.

2017 Commemorative Issues

This 7-dollar legal tender note commemorates Fiji Rugby 7s gold medal win at the 2016 Summer Olympics (XXXI) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 – 21 August 2016.Each note has a 7-digit serial number and 2-letter prefix. The prefix is AU (from Latin: aurum), the chemical symbol for gold.

2013 Issues

These notes feature new designs of Fijian flora and fauna replacing the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on all denominations. The 2-dollar note is not included because it has been replaced by a coin.
Each note has a 7-digit serial number and 3-letter prefix. The prefixes start at FFA, and the third letter advances alphabetically over time before advancing the second letter.

2007 – 2011 Issues

These notes feature new designs, including a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and images of local people, flora and fauna, culture and tradition, as well as industrial and economic activity. The banknotes vary in size lengthwise, with the new highest denomination (100 dollars) being the same size as preceding issues, and each successively smaller denomination 5 millimeters shorter. The notes are printed on De La Rue’s “Platinum” paper substrate for longer life.
Each note has a 6-digit serial number and 2-letter prefix. The prefixes start at CA, and the second letter advances alphabetically over time before advancing the first letter. New signature varieties have prefixes that resume where the preceding varieties end.

Kingdom of Fiji Treasury

Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau (Fijian: destroyer of Bau) was a ratu (ruler) and vunivalu (warlord) who united part of Fiji’s tribes, establishing a constitutional monarchy under his leadership (5 June 1871 – 10 October 1874), with Levuka as capital of the lands including all of modern Fiji, except the island of Rotuma.
The economy was poor, the government was in debt, and the Kingdom of Fiji Treasury (TRE) had difficulty maintaining an adequate supply of currency, then consisting of bills of exchange, checks drawn on colonial banks in Australia and New Zealand, and promissory notes from local traders, including Brewer & Joske (William H. O’Halloran Brewer and Paul Joske); Clarke, Spowart & Company; D. Levy & Sons; F. & W. Hennings; and J. C. Smith & Company.
Most of the treasury issues available on the collector market have been cancelled either with handstamps or handwritten lines through signatures and other design elements.
