SCP – Scottish Pound

Monetary System

1696: 1 pound Scots = 20 shillings = 240 pence
01.05.1707: 1 pound Sterling = 20 shillings = 240 pence
15.02.1971: 1 pound sterling (GBP) = 100 pence

In most countries, the issue of banknotes is handled exclusively by a single central bank or government, but in the United Kingdom several retail banks have had the right to print their own banknotes. The issuing of retail-bank banknotes in Scotland is subject to the Bank Charter Act 1844, Banknotes (Scotland) Act 1845, the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928, and the Coinage Act 1971.

2009 – 2015 Homecoming Scotland Issues

These notes were issued as part of the Homecoming Scotland Project 2009, a series of events designed to attract people of Scottish ancestry to visit Scotland. The campaign, organized by EventScotland and VisitScotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, and part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, claimed that “for every single Scot in their native land, there are thought to be at least five more overseas who can claim Scottish ancestry.”
The banknotes celebrate famous Scots on front and five World Heritage Sites in Scotland on the back. They were the first notes in the UK to have a “depth image” security hologram with the effect of a moving image behind the prominent front picture.
The dates on each note reflect the birthdays of the five famous Scots featured on front. These are fixed even when the year changes in later issues. The first prefix for all denominations is W/HS (for World Heritage Site).
Specimens without overprint are known. These were selvaged by excising them from the one uncut specimen sheet of 35 – 45 notes for each denomination that was sold off at auction.
Replacement notes with identical serial numbers, but different dates, are known. These are believed to be the result of problems in the production process.
